Magniberg and Jonathan Saunders
18 maggio 2023
Magniberg introduces a collaboration with the British designer Jonathan Saunders on a collection of bedlinen and pyjamas that subverts traditional floral patterns into a graphic contemporary expression with a bright acid-house vibe.
The floral prints on poplin are used for a complete range of duvet covers, pillow cases and thoughtfully designed pyjama shirts, pants and shorts. Tailored but nicely slouchy, cut for any gender, the pyjamas take you from the bedroom to the street and wending your way home again.
“Magniberg has these words pinned on the wall of the studio: ‘dance, gardening, sleep & sex’... Pyjamas are a part of that and not only for sleep. Ours will be worn in the garden, the restaurant, the club, the bed. With this collection everything comes together, the pyjamas with the bedding, the florals with the crisp piped plains. The flower patterns are a bit old school, but in those bright colourways and scale they become something else. Emotive. Evocative,” says Bengt Thornefors, co-founder, Magniberg.
The floral prints of peonies and roses have a personal connection for Magniberg co-founder Nina Norgren. ‘I was a florist before we started Magniberg so the move into florals really resonates for me.’ The Magniberg couple have long admired Saunders for his talents as a print designer and compelling colourist. Having come out of the fashion world to focus on the home space, they share an affinity with him, for blurring the lines between genres and creating a more expressive and emotional aesthetic in interiors.
For Saunders collaborating with Magniberg was a chance to return to where he started his stellar fashion career, designing textiles. To achieve his desired graphic effect he repeatedly copied Victorian flowery wallpaper until the details faded away, dissolved but still floral. The strong colour palette evokes 90s era raves and New Wave artwork, a source of inspiration for Saunders.
"The designs take very traditional bedlinen, working with semi-kitsch, Victorian-style florals, but seeing them through an acid-house lens, Our collection allows somebody to be more expressive. If you feel like changing it up and having a floral acid-house moment, then you do," says Saunders.
As a final flourish, the Magniberg team and Saunders selected quotes to stitch onto the brand’s signature labels. Lines such as: MY MORNING SUN IS THE DRUG; YOU, IT’S YOU AND ME; I’M WAITING FOR THAT FINAL MOMENT were garnered from lyrics from favourite love songs. They speak to the Magniberg mantra.
The collection comprises six floral prints on poplin and two plains, solid black and solid white on sateen, both with contrasting piping. The eight options come in duvet covers, pillow cases, pyjama shirts, pants and shorts. The pyjamas are available in sizes XS-XL.
